Initial Consonant Cluster Epenthesis in Turkish and its Implications to EFL

چکیده
Abstract
The phonological structure of Turkish does not allow word-initial consonant clusters. That is, the syllable onset position borrowed vocabulary requires insertion an epenthetic high vowel. This changes by addition extra to word. In schools, all grammar teachers teach those words as if they were one words. However, situation is different phonologically since these are but two Borrowed such tren (English train), plan plan) pronounced with vowel [i] and therefore become Our goal in this paper was analyse drawing diagrams order prove that loan actually consist syllables Turkish. illustrated phonetic transcription. We also concluded initial cluster epenthesis might affect EFL learners’ pronunciation English their foreign language classes.

In studies of production and second language acquisition, it is typically assumed that when speakers produce a vowel between the consonants in a sequence that is phonotactically illegal in the native langauge, it is a result of the phonological epenthesis of a vowel (e.g. Tarone 1987, Broselow and Finer 1991, Hancin-Bhatt and Bhatt 1998, Davidson, Jusczyk and Smolensky 2003). For example, Taron...
متن کاملCluster-Dependent Epenthesis Asymmetries
Anaptyxis-prothesis asymmetries, common in loanword adaptation and interlanguage phonology, are characterized by vowel insertion before sibilant + stop clusters, but into obstruent + sonorant clusters. I propose that such patterns reflect an epenthesis strategy in which the site of epenthesis is chosen to maximize perceptual similarity between input and output. Experimental evidence in support ...
متن کاملThe influence of preceding consonant on perceptual epenthesis in Japanese
Research on perceptual epenthesis in Japanese has revealed high back [ɯ] to be the vowel commonly perceived in illicit consonant sequences. However, loanword studies suggest that there are three epenthetic vowels, which reflect phonotactic restrictions on certain consonant + vowel sequences. Expanding previous perception studies, this paper investigates the extent to which perceptual epenthesis...
